As Bangalees (বাঙালি হিসেবে) Bangabandhu’s speech at the United Nations Assembly (জাতিসংঘের সাধারণ অধিবেশনে বঙ্গবন্ধুর ভাষণটি) is a matter of great pride for us (আমাদের জন্য অত্যন্ত গর্বের).
On September 25th 1974 (১৯৭৪ সালের ২৫ সেপ্টেম্বর), Bangabandhu delivered his historic speech (বঙ্গবন্ধু তাঁর ঐতিহাসিক ভাষণটি প্রদান করেন) during the 29th session of the United Nations General Assembly (জাতিসংঘের সাধারণ পরিষদের ২৯তম অধিবেশনে), just a week after (যার মাত্র এক সপ্তাহ আগে), Bangladesh became a member of the UN (বাংলাদেশ জাতিসংঘের সদস্যপদ লাভ করে).
The president of the UN (জাতিসংঘের প্রেসিডেন্ট) welcomed Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানকে স্বাগত জানান) to address the General Assembly (সাধারণ অধিবেশনে বক্তব্য রাখার জন্য).
He started his speech by saying (তিনি তাঁর ভাষণ শুরু করেন এভাবে), “Today as I stand before this Assembly (আজ আমি এই অধিবেশনে উপস্থিত হয়েছি), I share with you profound satisfaction that (আমি গভীর সন্তুষ্টির সাথে আপনাদের জানাচ্ছি যে) the 75 million people of Bangladesh (বাংলাদেশের সাড়ে ৭ কোটি মানুষ) are now represented in this Parliament of Man (এই মানবজাতির এই পার্লামেন্টে এখন প্রতিনিধিত্ব করছে)”.
This speech is remarkable in the history of Bangladesh (বাংলাদেশের ইতিহাসে এই ভাষণটি উল্লেখযোগ্য) for primarily two reasons (প্রধানত দুই কারণে).
Firstly, it marked the first time a speech was delivered in Bangla at the UN (প্রথমত, এটা ছিল জাতিসংঘে দেয়া প্রথম বাংলা ভাষণ).
Secondly, it introduced fresh ideas and policies (দ্বিতীয়ত, ভাষণটিতে নতুন ধারণা ও নীতির সাথে পরিচয় করিয়ে দেয়া হয়) aimed at building a brave new world (যার লক্ষ্য হচ্ছে একটি সাহসী নতুন পৃথিবী গড়ে তোলা), free of economic inequalities, social injustice, military aggression and threats of nuclear war, যেখানে থাকবে না অর্থনৈতিক বৈষম্য, সামাজিক অবিচার, সামরিক আগ্রাসন এবং পারমাণবিক যুদ্ধের হুমকি).
